JEREMY CARES INC. ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE 2020 PEDIATRIC CANCER SURVIVOR AND SIBLING COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
$20,000.00 in College Scholarship Funds Awarded to 21 students in Northeast Ohio

AVON LAKE, OHIO, – Jeremy Cares Inc. is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s College Scholarships. This year a total of $20, 000.00 in funds will be awarded to 23 deserving young adults. This is the seventh year Jeremy Cares Inc. has awarded scholarships. During these seven years, 94 awards have been given totaling $99,000.00 in scholarship funds.
The scholarships recognize young adult survivors of pediatric, adolescent young adult (PAYA) cancers and siblings who have or have had a brother or sister with PAYA cancer.
Seven Survivor Scholarship awards of $1,000.00 were awarded to: Champaigne Corfee (Eastlake), Brian Eckert (Cleveland), Jane Finley (Bay Village), Garrett Gulden (University Heights), Morgan Krek (Berea), Brooke Somosko (Kent) and Timothy Tusick (Strongsville). Five renewal scholarships awards of $1,000.00 were awarded to: Luke Bazan, 2ndyear (Broadview Heights), Mark Fazio, 2nd year (Twinsburg), Hannah Miller, 6th year (Huron), Sam Smith, 3rd year (Sandusky), and Emily Zichi, 3rd year (Amherst). “These young adults have displayed incredible courage and resilience and we are thrilled to be able to celebrate with them as they chase their dreams.” stated Megan Kuhlenschmidt, Scholarship Chair of Jeremy Cares Inc.
Staying true to the mission of Jeremy Cares Inc. who serves the entire family, scholarship applications are also accepted from siblings. Four sibling awards of $1,000.00 were awarded to: Annie Potter (Kirtland), Francis Tusick (Strongsville), Michael Tusick (Strongsville), and Natalie Tusick (Strongsville). Two sibling awards of $500.00 were awarded to: Troy Cole (Wellington) and Cristy Kuhar (Brooklyn). Three renewal awards of $1,000.00 were awarded to Amira Massey , 2nd year (North Olmsted), Alexander Ramer, 5th year (Brecksville), and Katherine Finley, 4thyear (Bay Village). “We understand that cancer affects the entire family and siblings often make their own sacrifices and deserve to be honored next to their siblings. “added Kuhlenschmidt.
Scholarship winners are chosen on various grounds. Winners possessed clear determination, integrity of character, poignant essays, and displayed a desire to live by the philosophy of paying it forward, the same philosophy that Jeremy Cares Inc. was born from. Applicants are or have been patients, or siblings of patients, at University Hospitals of Cleveland or the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Jeremy Cares is an Avon Lake based non-profit organization established in 2009 with a mission of “creating moments of joy” for families going through a pediatric medical crisis. The organization is named after Jeremy George (Avon Lake) who was diagnosed with Leukemia during his senior year at Avon Lake High School. Jeremy is now a 2014 cum laude graduate from Kent State University but had to put his college dreams off for three years while in treatment. “Being able to go away to college is monumental to these young adults. It symbolizes moving forward and getting on with their lives. We wanted to celebrate this moment with them,” stated Kuhlenschmidt.
